I have REPEATEDLY asked the Hubs to check with his parents so I can plan my Thanksgiving weekend. We usually do the actual Turkey Day with my family, and at some point in the weekend, get suckered up to go visit his parents, about two hours away. This situation has worked out well for us for the past five or six years.
Last week, after much poking and prodding, the Hubs finally called his parents and pitched an new plan - something about how we would visit BEFORE Thanksgiving, thus freeing up our weekend and not having to travel (YAY). His mother kind of agreed, I think, but sometimes she is hitting the bottle (and by bottle, I mean can of beer with a straw) too hard, and who knows if she actually is aware of what she agreed to.
Well. I have secured myself some Thanksgiving plans - Thursday will be the obscene meal (includes full Italian dinner, followed by turkey and all the trimmings. Seriously.) at my Grandmother's house (we HAVE to do that, remember the guilt?). Friday, Lust will be in town, and has expressed interest in going on her Crazy-ass Black Friday Shopping Spree (I need to get in shape for this - she's small and limber while I, on the other hand, are none of those things), and Saturday, my mother (Lord, help me) and I will be traveling to see the Nutcracker at the Kenned.y Cen.ter (a true step up from the local ballet, and looking forward to the performance, surprisingly).
Unfortunately, due to all these plans, there will be NO time to go visit the in-laws.
Damn.
At some point, my mother-in-law is going to wonder when we are coming for Thanksgiving (and totally disregard the conversation she had with the Hubs about this issue), and pitch a shit-fit about our attendance. I fully intend on standing strong, since I have plans (shopping IS a plan, and the other one requires TICKETS!). It's not as if I want to travel to visit with these people (for various reasons), so I am perfectly fine with not going. I mean, who wants to go visit people who don't really care that you are there, and sit in a smoke-filled haze while watching television and doing no actual visiting? Especially when the visit is topped off with some sort of screaming match, and me sitting awkwardly in the middle? Hubs will probably get guilted into something, but I am very much going to stand my ground with this one! Currently, he is jaded and unimpressed with them, so I think he's on board! Happy Holidays!
